About Neuropsychology

  • A neuropsychologist is a psychologist with advanced training in how the brain affects thinking, emotion, and behaviour. They use specialised assessments to understand cognitive functioning and guide treatment or support planning.

  • A neuropsychologist focuses on assessing and understanding brain-based changes in cognition and behaviour. Think cognitive testing. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication, while Psychologists & Clinical Psychologists generally focus on therapy and emotional wellbeing.

  • Assessments vary dependent on the referral question. Assessment typically involve structured testing of memory, attention, problem-solving, language, and other skills to identify patterns of cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

  • Common reasons include memory problems, attention difficulties, changes in thinking after injury or illness, or clarification of diagnoses such as ADHD, dementia, or learning disorders.

  • Process Neuropsychology primarily works with adults and older adults, though referrals for adolescents may be considered depending on the referral question. This may change in the future with demand.

The Assessment Process

  • You’ll complete a detailed interview followed by cognitive testing. The process is interactive and designed to be supportive and paced according to your needs.

  • Most assessments take between 3 to 5 hours, depending on the complexity and purpose.

  • Get a good night’s sleep, eat beforehand, bring glasses or hearing aids if needed, and take medications as usual unless advised otherwise. In short - do what you normally would and come well fed! It’s a long day (but we can take breaks).

  • Yes. A feedback session is provided to discuss results and recommendations in plain language.

  • Reports are typically available within 2–3 weeks after assessment, depending on the complexity.

  • Reports are sent to the referrer only, unless otherwise agreed.

  • Yes, certain assessments and interviews can be conducted online, depending on the referral question and client suitability.

Fees and Funding

  • At Process Neuropsychology the typical cost is $2,000 + GST, varying based on the referral question and complexity.

  • GST is added to the base fee as required by law. This will be reflected on all invoices.

  • Neuropsychological assessments are not currently covered by Medicare, but some private health funds or compensatory schemes may provide rebates.

  • Yes, the NDIS may fund assessments if they are relevant to an individual’s plan goals.

Referrals and Suitability

  • No formal referral is required for privately funded assessments. Formal referrals from doctors or other professionals are desirable (e.g., Letter of Instruction).

  • If there are ongoing difficulties with memory, attention, reasoning, or learning, a neuropsychological assessment can help clarify the underlying cause.

  • You can book a 60-minute consultation session to discuss your concerns, history, and whether assessment is appropriate.

  • Yes, Process Neuropsychology provides assessments for legal and clinical purposes, including capacity evaluations and forensic reporting (excluding testamentary capacity).

  • Relevant medical, educational, or legal reports are helpful for context and can be shared securely before the appointment.

  • Yes, support people and family members can attend interviews or feedback sessions if the client consents. Cognitive testing is only completed 1:1 (with an interpreter if required). Family members and support persons cannot be present during cognitive testing.

Confidentiality, Data & Records

  • All information is treated confidentially in accordance with professional and legal standards. Information is only shared with consent or when legally required. A formal consent form will be provided with further information prior the assessment.

  • Data is securely stored in encrypted digital systems compliant with Australian privacy legislation. Paper files are kept in locked storage.

  • Records are typically retained for seven years after the last contact, or longer for minors as per regulatory requirements. Reports a typically kept longer.

  • Reports can be shared with your consent. In some cases, legal or funding requirements determine who receives copies.

Professional & Educational Services

  • Yes. Consultation sessions are available for clients, families, and professionals to discuss complex cases, cognitive concerns, or assessment planning. Clinical supervision is not currently available.

  • Yes. Hamish Phillips is available for professional education and presentations on neuropsychology, cognition, and brain–behaviour relationships in clinical and organisational settings.
